WHY I COLLECT BRASSES

Well about 4 Years ago (around 1996)I went to a Local Farm/Estate  sale and Out of the Blue decided to Purchase a Small Box of Horse Brasses that were tucked away in a Darkish Corner, and Upon getting home that day I Excitedly opened the Box, and Low and  behold, I Got what you may say "HOOKED" to be quite honest amongst the Brasses there were not that many of Interest !!, But I Got The "BUG" and have been collecting them ever since,

So From that day on I have been to Numerous Farm Sales, Antique / Collectors Fairs and Flea markets throughout the Country in My Plight to Build My Modest Collection, I do say Modest as Compared to some fellow collectors I only have what seems a Smallish Collection !

My Favourites are the ceramic Centre Brasses showing scenes like: Hunting Scenes, Birds, Animals especially dogs and Working Horses, although I do have a soft Spot for Race Horses and especially for the Fish Ceramics but rarely come across any that takes my fancy or is not in My collection

Where I have dated Brasses for example c.1920 this is due to research through many books and various other sources Most brasses as you will see do have little marks etc that is consistent with Harness wear and this adds character to the brasses

My Theory is that the Majority of  Brasses Found have Not been displayed on a working Horse but have in fact been on Display in a Country Manor House / estate,  Olde England Type Public House or Farm House and Even a Little Cottage tucked away in the Country side at the side of a Beautiful little brook full of topping fish "Just hang on a minute just got to go and get my pole and a handful of maggots" (Whoaa Bob Work to do !! )  right daydreaming over about my second passion for life and back to the task for the day, Where they adorned the Oak Beams and Rustic fire places for Decoration

although in the last 30 years or so the Collecting of Brasses has become so popular that even dwellings like Mine ( A Standard sized 3 bedroom House)  have a place for these Little Beauties !

at the Moment I am Filling my stair well and to be Honest it will Take me Years to do this ?

Although it is Apparent that some Brasses are Rare these are  far and few between, Then  there are the Hard to Find, Popular designs & of course the mass produced Modern Brasses of Which you will find a Nice selection of Each on This web Site

Thanks for taking the time and Good Luck With your Quest to Start or even Expand your existing collection
